Title A name given to the resource Sydney Brenner Description An account of the resource The Sydney Brenner Collection consists of over 300 manuscript boxes of materials documenting the life and career of Dr. Sydney Brenner, co-recipient of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries concerning genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death. The collections documents his early years as a student in South Africa, to his work as a scientist and administrator at the Medical Research Council (MRC), to his role in the biotechnology industry in the United Kingdom. The collection also includes material that belonged to Francis Crick and Leslie Barnett; the two shared offices with Brenner at the MRC beginning in the 1950s (Crick left in the mid-1970s and Barnett in the 1990s). Harris's lasting legacy is a series of meetings held annually-the Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology and their associated red volumes. Harris (1933) wrote in the preface to the first volume of the Symposia series: "...The primary motive of the conference symposia is to consider a given biological problem from its chemical. physical and mathematical, as well as from its biological aspects". The word quantitative highlighted Harris's goal for research and he saw that holding meetings was a way to promote both that approach to biological research and the Laboratory. The Symposia became tremendously successful under the leadership of Milislav Demerec. whose own research in bacterial genetics, and especially his hospitality to Salvador Luria and Max Delbruck, led to Cold Spring Harbor becoming a gathering place for molecular geneticists.
